All Day | For refusal | Hybrid

transmediale

Organizer: transmediale e.V.

The year-long transmediale presents exhibitions, screenings and discourse programs, as well as residencies, workshops and commissions to sustainably engage with the material, technological and cultural aspects of refusal. The new, expanded structure, which unfolds in online and in-person events, is a direct response to COVID-19 and is intended to be a year-round engagement with the theme.

THE TOPIC: for refusal

The festival kicks off on 01/28-21 with the digital platform Almanac for Refusal. The exhibition “Rendering Refusal” will open at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien and Betonhalle in Silent Green Kulturquartier as soon as measures and regulations to contain the pandemic allow. Starting in February, “remote visits” and extensive documentation will already make the exhibition digitally accessible. In the new transmediale project space, a monthly changing film program and discourse events will be presented starting in April. The first part of the annual program aims in particular to bring together artistic positions that question control systems and rethink algorithmic logics. An online program on the website, which will be continuously developed over the duration of the festival, complements the physical event formats.

PROGRAM

Almanac for Refusal (from Jan. 28, 2021).

Browser-based, multifaceted artworks will be uploaded to the digital platform concurrently with the running of the event. In these contributions and documentations, artists*, designers*, scientists* and activists* come together and show in practice how refusals unfold and circumvent the status quo.

Rendering Refusal (Exhibition)

Here 14 artists show in different strategies how refusal is realized and explored. The exhibition is divided into two venues – Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien and Betonhalle in Silent Green Kulturquartier. The event runs online through March and can be visited remotely. In-person, the event can be attended as soon as Corona regulations allow.

remote.response.request(filmprogram)

This will feature new cinematic visions and is intended as an attempt to respond to the limbo of film triggered by the pandemic. The in-person event will take place as soon as the official Corona regulations allow.
