Germany drops in freedom of speech ranking

The current ” Freedom of Speech Ranking 2021″ has been published by the organization Reporter Ohne Grenzen. Germany is now no longer in the “Good situation” category, which is the best, but only in the “Satisfactory situation” category. This means that we have fallen from 11th to 13th place.

According to the organization, this is due to the increasing violence at demonstrations against the Corona measures, which has been perpetrated against journalists*. This has enumerated 65 violent attacks, which according to the organization is a fivefold number compared to the previous year. Board spokesman Michael Rediske says this is “a clear alarm signal.”

Rediske continues, “Independent journalism is the only effective means against the disinformation pandemic that has accompanied the Corona pandemic for the past year. At the same time, in the past year it has become more difficult than ever for many journalists to work without fear of violence or repression. Now, as the world hopefully returns to normal soon, respect for the indispensable role of journalism in a functioning society must also return.” (Source: Reporter Ohne Grenzen)
