On November 24th, the SPD, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen and FDP presented the newly drafted coalition agreement. As early as the beginning of October, the German Cultural Council published eleven demands that were to lead to the future stabilization of culture and media within the framework of the coalition agreement. The German Cultural Council is now saddened by the rejection of a separate Ministry of Culture, which will remain a Minister of State in the Federal Chancellery. However, it is positive that the state goal of culture is to be anchored in the Basic Law.
Even if not all demands were met, the efforts of the new coalition to support the cultural and creative industries are evident. According to the coalition agreement, the social situation of creative professionals will improve in the future, funding programs will continue and copyright law will be better regulated. The culture of remembrance and the associated reappraisal are also to be strengthened, the return of objects from colonial contexts is to be supported, and foreign cultural and educational policy is to be further strengthened, made more flexible and coordinated across departmental boundaries.
The coalition agreement must now be approved by the parties’ grassroots.
