Home Video Market 2020 Report Published

The report on the home video market in 2020 has been published by the German Federal Film Board (FFA). Due to cinema and cultural closures due to the pandemic, the use of home video offerings has consequently increased and also achieved the best best result since the market data was collected.

With a total revenue of 2.59 billion euros, this was increased by 14 percent compared to the previous year 2019 with 2.28 billion euros.

In summary, the home video market achieved a renter or buyer base of 25.5 million people in 2020, which corresponds to a reach of 38% of the German population aged ten and over. These therefore bought or rented a movie on DVD/Bluray at least once in 2020, bought or rented it as a single download, or spent on SVoD.

SVoD is once again the highest revenue-generating single segment in the home video market with EUR 1.57 billion in revenue and a total share of 60%, followed by purchased video on DVD/Blu-ray with EUR 0.52 billion in revenue and a total share of 20%, and the digital purchase market EST with EUR 286 million in revenue and a total share of 11%.

The most successful theatrical movie in 2020 in the physical sell-through market was “Frozen 2” with 500,945 sales,
followed by “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” with 368,080 sales. this was followed as the third most purchased movie by “Joker” with 276,794 sales. The most successful German theatrical film was “Das perfekte Geheimnis” in 8th place with 163,787 DVD and Blu-ray sales.
